Driving in the City of London

Date updated: 31/03/2023

Driving in the City of London is different

The Square Mile has one of the highest densities of pedestrians and cyclists in the UK at peak times. Drivers need to take extra care, respect the City's 20 mph speed limit and be alert, especially for people walking and cycling.

The City  of London Corporation is the highway authority for the streets in the City of London except for the Red Routes, which are managed by Transport for London.

Activities on the highway section has information on road closures, highway fault reporting and major works or events on our highways.

Parking section has information about on street parking, parking restrictions and car parks.

For information on the Congestion Charge, Ultra Low Emissions Zones(ULEZ) and Low Emission Zones (LEZ) go to driving on the Transport for London website.

A shared responsibility

If you operate a large vehicle within the City of London you need to do so under a number of standards and schemes. They aim to reduce the risk of collisions, save lives and protect communities. These include but are not limited to the Direct Vision Standard and HGV Safety Permit. Visit driving to find out more about complying with these schemes.

All of us, whether we are driving or managing the transport network, share a responsibility to reduce road danger and safe lives. You can support this as a road user by driving at safe speeds

CityMark

All construction projects in the City of London are members of the Considerate Contractors Scheme and City Mark is an addition to that scheme. Sites in the Square Mile are monitored though CityMark to ensure the implementation of leading Work Related Road Safety initiatives, such as the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) and the Construction Logistics for Community Safety (CLOCS).

If properly implemented at every tier FORS and CLOCS ensure safer supply chains, compliant vehicles and better trained drivers. In the long-term CityMark will help reduce road safety risks and build the bigger picture of road safety compliance in the City of London.
