Whittington: The Man, The Myth and The Cat
Dr Johnson's House
Join Celine Luppo McDaid, the Hyde Director of Dr Johnson's House, for this illustrated talk to learn more about the myriad of people living with him in nearby 17 Gough Square in the middle of the 18th century, and why he thought of it as a 'noisy and difficult' household. The great lexicographer moved there with his wife, Tetty, in 1747 to write his great Dictionary of the English Language, but following her death in 1752 a number of fascinating people joined him, from a blind poet and an unqualified physician and to the first black schoolmaster in England - not forgetting there was also a very famous cat!
