Health and safety legislation
The City Corporation is responsible for enforcing health and safety legislation in most workplaces within the City of London. Whilst many employees in the City will not face significant hazards as part of their day to day work, there remain a number of high risk activities such as window cleaning or maintenance/engineering work that go on around us all the time. As a regulator we act in the public interest to reduce the risk of work-related deaths, ill-health and serious injury across the City workplaces.
Our work involves a mixture of proactive inspection and intervention alongside responding to complaints from members of the public or investigating accidents that have been reported to us.
Common issues in the City of London include problems with:
- Lifting equipment
- Legionella control
- Work at height
- Slips and trips
- Stress
- Manual handling
- Display screen equipment
- Workstation problems
Although the team will consider all health and safety concerns.
View our updated Commercial Environmental Health Team’s Plan 2023-24 below; details on the delivery of our specific health & safety intervention work are outlined. The Plan is Committee approved.
All interventions are planned in accordance with the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) advice on targeting interventions which can be found on the Health and Safety Executive website.
The service is committed to the principles of the Regulators' Compliance Code, a statutory code for all regulators. We have a Policy Statement on Enforcement approved by the Port Health and Environmental Services Committee. This sets out our approach to enforcement work in the City.
