Waste strategy and future plans

Date updated: 21/11/2024

The City of London Corporation has a strong track record in sustainable waste management, being the first London Authority to sort and recycle waste from our streets and now no waste is sent direct to landfill. The City Corporation runs an awards scheme for business of all sizes, the Clean City Awards, which promotes and rewards best practice in sustainable waste management and has been running for over 31 years.

New circular Economy Framework

The City Corporation is developing a new Circular Economy Framework which will help transition the City of London to a Circular City by 2040, in line with our targets in the Climate Action Strategy. We aim to publish the Circular Economy Framework by Spring 2025.

Reduction and recycling plan

Under the Mayor of London’s Environment Strategy (LES) all London Boroughs are required to develop a Reduction and Recycling Plan (RRP) covering the period 2018 - 2022 and more recently 2023 – 2025, which sets out how each London borough will work towards the objectives of the LES.
